Recipes from the Journey

When Steve walked into the Atlas Mountains with Black the Spirit Dog, food was part of the adventure too.

Meals were simple, shared, and made with whatever was to hand - warm flatbreads cooked on fires, sweet mint tea poured high into glasses, bowls of fruit and spices passed around at the end of a long day’s walking.

These recipes are inspired by that journey.

They’re easy to make, hands-on, and designed for children to try at home with a grown-up nearby. You don’t need fancy equipment or hard-to-find ingredients - just curiosity, a bit of care, and a willingness to have a go.

Like stories, food is something we make together.

So choose a recipe, roll up your sleeves, and bring a small taste of the adventure into your kitchen.

Moroccan Orange & Cinnamon Salad

(No cooking – perfect for younger children)

Why it’s great: Bright, sweet, and simple. Children can practise peeling, slicing, sprinkling - and tasting.

You’ll need

  • 2–3 oranges

  • A pinch of ground cinnamon

  • A teaspoon of honey or orange juice (optional)

  • A few fresh mint leaves (optional)

What to do

  1. Peel the oranges and slice them into rounds.

  2. Lay them on a plate like a sun.

  3. Sprinkle a tiny pinch of cinnamon over the top.

  4. Add a drizzle of honey or juice if you like.

  5. Tear up some mint leaves and scatter them on.

“…one small pinch can change a whole dish…”

Camp-Style Flatbreads

(Great for mixing, patting, and flipping)

Why it’s great: This is bread at its most basic - just like the kind made on the road.

You’ll need

  • 120g plain flour

  • 120g yoghurt

  • A pinch of salt

  • A splash of oil (for cooking)

What to do

  1. Mix the flour, yoghurt, and salt in a bowl.

  2. Knead gently until it comes together.

  3. Split into small balls and flatten with your hands.

  4. Cook in a dry frying pan for a minute or two each side until golden.

Serve with: honey, jam, or a little olive oil.

“…people have made bread for thousands of years with just flour and water…”
